保护英国水道—伦敦泰晤士河

As river traffic increases, so does the need to manage important waterways such as the Thames Estuary. The Navigation Systems team at the Port of London Authority (PLA) recently purchased HTZ Communications to ensure their communications network was free from interference and fit for purpose.

Tasked with supporting the Authority's VHF, DMR, UHF, radar and CCTV infrastructure, the team will primarily use the software to manage microwave links along the river, including point-to-point microwave budgets and modeling the impact of proposed tall buildings on the LOS link . To ensure the team was on their way, they conducted a two-day bespoke training session covering all the technologies used by the Authority. User training includes:

  • Marine VHF with Coverage Analysis and Interference vs. Expected Site Analysis
  • DMR for coverage analysis and planning new sites
  • Radar coverage analysis, site overlap, and checking the impact of new buildings and wind turbines on existing infrastructure
  • UHF point-to-multipoint scanning telemetry equipment
  • CCTV Site Coverage Analysis
  • Support for licensing with UK regulator Ofcom.

PLA Technical Support Engineer David Barnard said: "Managing multiple communication networks along the river requires a multi-technology network planning and modeling tool. With HTZ, we can manage all existing radio networks using one software. As technology advances , we are well-positioned to evaluate, plan, and model emerging technologies to support the Authority's demanding communications needs."

David and his team currently use the software to determine the best locations for radio equipment and to analyze radar coverage along the river.

Port of London Authority

The Port of London Authority is the guardian of the River Thames in London. Covering more than 95 miles of rivers from Teddington to the North Sea, the Authority is responsible for ensuring safe passage for business and leisure users, protecting trade and travel, and protecting and enhancing the environment. To support this activity, the Authority operates multiple radar stations that provide detailed coverage of the river, AIS stations for collision avoidance, a sensor network for tide information and weather updates, and microwave and network infrastructure.
